I've always wanted to do murals. I have painted a shed, a supporting wall, and a large fence panel, but I've never painted on a public building. This opportunity came along, so I signed up and participated in my first collaborative mural. It's in the courtyard of the Pimser Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, 1737 Russell Cave Rd. It's the result of the contributions of 14 artists, including Hitness, the Italian mural painter and The Image Hunter. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with, and alongside, some great local artists - Broco Loco, Blake Eames, Michelle Armstrong, to name a few. For me it was a challenge, for sure. I was ready to just paint over what I had done at the end of the first day- really disliked what had jumped off my paintbrush (duct-taped to the end of the extension pole) and on to my ginormous canvas. I finally had to have a conversation with my creative self and figure out what was going awry. . .. lots of sleep lost that first night, some stepping back and "seeing" the wall differently, going back to what MY style was, and . . . getting a BIGGER LADDER!! Once I finally came back to what I know and feel when I paint, it just flowed easily and effortlessly. I learned a lot abut myslef- how I handle stress, my insecurities, how to share, play well with others, and mostly that I really don't want to do HUGE murals. Give me a wall, or the side of a garage, or maybe a single story surface, YES. but I think that's my limit. And I want my own ladder. ;)
