Here's How~
My client had the camper painted professionally to match her vehicle. The best process is for the base color to be applied, then the design painted over it, THEN an automotive clear coat applied after the design cures, about a week or so.
Supplies -
Aquacote waterbased Bulletin Enamels by Ronan
320 grit sandpaper, watercolor crayon,
Paintbrushes - I found that the larger brushes held too much paint and it tended to drip on the vertical surface. So I quickly resorted to my one inch artists' brush with natural bristles so it doesn't leave brush marks as much. However, you can expect the brush to be used up during this process. The paint dries REALLY FAST.
The way I did this particular job-
1. I sketched the design using a watercolor "crayon". However, this DOES interact with the water-based enamel, so you might want to try something besides the actual surface to make sure you're ok with what it does, and practice!
2. Sand over the surfaces to be painted to open the pores of the base and allow the enamel to adhere.
3. go for it!
Notes: The paint will crackle if you put a second coat on too soon. It dries instantly in the heat/sun. May bubble if it freezes before it cures. Each color has a little bit different character, as in opaqueness, mix-ability, and adherence. Also, the color chart on the website is not really so accurate. Example - Magenta is not purpley red, it is Pepto Pink, Green was TEAL, etc.. Would ALWAYS recommend a clearcoat on auto type surfaces exposed to the elements. Not really sure about any other surfaces, as this is a new paint/process to me.
Good luck and PLEASE share your results with me via email or on WHIMSYTHINGS on Facebook!
